If you're being questioned or charged for a crime you didn't commit, you may think there is no need to hire a lawyer to represent you. You may feel like if you explain yourself, the police are sure to understand and let you go. This is not always the case.
According to The Innocence Project: "... the few studies that have been done estimate that between 2.3% and 5% of all prisoners in the U.S. are innocent (for context, if just 1% of all prisoners are innocent, that would mean that more than 20,000 innocent people are in prison). "
The best course of action for anyone being charged with a crime is to immediately ask for a lawyer and wait to say anything else until they retain one. A good criminal defense lawyer will know how to navigate the questioning process without letting their client say something that can be used to incriminate them even if they are innocent.
