Heroes of the Monkey Tavern is an extremely poor offering in the tile-based dungeon crawler genre. It lacks depth, variety and any form of genuine skill-based challenge.

Typically in games in this genre the player is able to move around enemies to 'dodge' attacks. There is a reason they do this; it adds an element of player skill to the combat and heightens the sense of desperation and urgency. Not so in HotMT, however. In this game the player is actively punished for moving during combat, in the form of massive amounts of 'fleeing' damage that slams the entire party for a sizable chunk of their health. The result of this mechanic is that combat becomes nothing more than a gear-check with no more depth than a clicker game and virtually no element of skill. This, combined with the limited enemy variety, makes the combat very, very dull.

Another aspect of the game that lessens player agency even further is the fixed progression paths for characters. When characters level up they gain pre-determined stats and abilities. There is no decision making to be done by the player which, besides making the game even more dull, reduces any connection or feeling of ownership with the characters. There is no feeling that any choices you make as a player have any effect on the game, largely because there are no choices beyond the most superficial aspects. You can't even name party members during character creation.

There are other factors that further reduce the appeal of HotMT. There is a distinct lack of visual variety, the dungeon layouts are less than inspired and the puzzles largely amount to nothing more than trial-and-error.

I don't know if the Steam version of HotMT is a port from mobile, but it feels like it. I do, however, know that it is on Nintendo Switch. While I'm on the subject I would like to point out that the Switch version is even worse than this one. The controls are absolutely horrible and I was unable to find the button for the map. I'm not even sure it exists.


Anyone looking for a tile-based dungeon crawler has several options available to them. They could play Legend of Grimrock, it's sequel, or any of the other games inspired by it. There's even a Japanese version with manga art. Or, at a push, they could install dosbox and play one of the classics, like Eye of the Beholder or Dungeon Master. Any of those options would be preferable to playing this.. After playing "The Deep Paths: Labyrinth Of Andokost" and being a bit underwhelmed by it, I thought this one might be more fun. In fact, the controls and UI are indeed somewhat better; but overall this game is even more generic in its design choices, enemies and combat. Despite its funny name, Heroes of the Monkey Tavern doesn't feature any humor or even story - you don't even get a lame excuse to why you enter the dungeon, you just hear "there is a dungeon" and off the heroes go. (As usual, without any weapons.) During the game there is absolutely no story, even though now and then a room is decorated with shelves or beds. In "Andokost" at least the characters talk to each other from time to time.

As far as the combat goes, I wasn't annoyed by it, but it's really strange that you don't even see the monsters and their animations much, because you only stare at the icons at the bottom side of the screen to wait for the cooldowns of each weapon and spell.

Also, it would be nice if health potions wouldn't be clickable if the character's health is full, and the same with spells if the character's mana is empty.. Could be a good game. Needs work.. I needed 10h for my 1st playthough in Hard difficulty. I chose this game because I was looking for an old fashioned dungeon crawler after having recently finished a similar game (Fall of the Dungeon Guardians), and was not disappointed, and will leave positive review (6.5\/10). It cannot fully compete with LoG1+2 or other Indie gems like Fall of the Dungeon Guardians...

My most important complaint... way too little monsters... I killed all monsters, and did not even get the "kill 100 monster achievement!", it was less than 80! Not only is that a no-go as an achievement hunter to require multiple parties\/sessions, but it was also just too little to do! I would at least 2-3x the monster content!!! There was one particular level (minotaurus), which had only exactely 1 monster in it... and the one before appeared without any monsters until the very end of that level...in<\/a> other games the monster count is more like 500!

The game was too short... only 8 levels (the game mentioned before had 20, each larger than here, and same price tag!)

Be aware that in this game, you are taking the tanking approach (unlike LoG)... several reviewers seemed to be annoyed by it, I actually prefer it that way... and the actual first crawlers all worked like that (as it was turn based movement, there was no escaping or side-tracking monsters back then)

It is often compared to the big crawlers of today, LoG1+2... rightfully so, and yes, this game cannot keep up.... they have more traps, more dungeon levels, pressure plates, throwing items\/stones, teleports, outdoor area, more monsters and monster types... so there is plenty to still improve on, but all that still makes this a good game, its just not in the same league.

The music was nice, as was the atmosphere of the game. So in summary a nice first attempt, worth at a 50% discount (which is normally and often happening during sales at Steam), but needs to improve to be able to compete with the champions, but also some other Indie crawlers! Looking forward to a 2nd part!. This game is pretty solid. If you're into the dungeon crawler style of games then I'd definitly recommend it.

PROS

+Good selection of party members, each feeling fairly unique
+Game felt polished the whole way through with no glitches
+No weird difficulty spikes for the sake of having an "insane" last boss.

CONS
-Character level ups have no customization, and minimal descriptions
EXAMPLE: When my warrior gained a level it just said POWER HIT. I hovered the mouse over it and no explanation is given. While fighting I would randomly see the words POWER HIT appear so you figure out what it does.

-The automapping is ok...you oneed to face a wall to make it appear. This leaves your map with a bunch of liitle gaps, and makes you feel like you need to strafe along the walls to make sure it all gets drawn and you're not lost later

-The secrets are BRUTALLY hard to see later in the game. Its mostly the stone block of a wall thats pushed out a bit.

-Game is very short. Took me 5.0 hours exactly to finish it. However I am really not sick of it at all. I would start a new game with a new party right away if I didn't have a massive backlog of everything else to play.


All in all this is quite a bit of fun to play. $5 for it on sale is...
